Geographic Information Systems or GIS turn data into information using spatial properties. Most refer to this line of work as "mapping" or "cartography".GIS pushes the delivery system of information to visual representations. There are several ways to present this data: Web-based, Printed format or Client-based. Frequently, applications need to be rewritten using programming languages associated with the GIS software to handle repetitive tasks or for data collections and database updates. GIS systems are quickly moving from web-based static maps to real-time maps updated immediately using ActiveX controls or Java-Beans. The back-end side of the data is also switching from flat-file formats to large spatial databases like Oracle8i or SQL Server with ArcSDE. The links on the left show examples of my work using MapInfo and ArcGIS, both Desktop and Web-based. |
